This past Friday I got a last minute invite to the “retirement” party of one of the orthopedists our research group works with (the degree of retirement is still questionable – he will be continuing with research and other small things but not working as much). It was a very fancy affair at the Westin hotel in Halifax and also a fundraiser for charity, and raised over $40,000 for Special Olympics. There were 410 attendees and speeches from famous athletes, sportscasters, family members, friends, and fellow doctors, many referring to the guest of honor’s passion for nicknames. With so many people there I wasn’t sure if I would even get to meet him but he did come over to talk to his research peeps at the end of the dinner and surprise….I got a nickname. He proceeded to call me “Duke” for the rest of the night (my undergrad alma mater) – “Oh hey, it’s Gillian and Duke!” “Duke, let me buy you a drink” “Gillian, Duke, have a great night, thanks for coming”
So I have a new nickname – and got to attend another great party! Congratulations Doc.
